Lendonwood Gardens will be the beneficiary of an iris rhizome sale now under way at the botanical garden in Grove. Grown and donated by Lendonwood board members Pauline Hale and Jim Corbridge, the perennial bulbs include a wide range of cultivars and colors.
Cost is $1.00 per rhizome, with proceeds designated for the continued maintenance of the Gardens. The bulbs are available in Lendonwood’s plant sale area, just behind the Oklahoma Garden.
“We are delighted to share these irises with the public, in support of Lendonwood,” Corbridge said. “Over the years, we have collected many different types for our home garden and have tried to keep them identified and labeled for purposes of sharing.”
Almost all of the bulbs were purchased from iris gardens in Boulder, Colorado, and Hondo, New Mexico, he said. Prices for the original rhizomes ranged between $8.00 and $25.00.
Examples of cultivars in the Lendonwood iris sale include Acoma (light lavender with purple streaking); Palazzo (lacy pale yellow); Wondervu (pale blue); Champagne Elegance (cream and light tan); Immortality (large white); and Alpine Twilight (shades of mauve), among others. A few of the plants are re-bloomers, with some flowers returning in late summer.
Corbridge said irises are among the easiest perennials to plant, care for and maintain. “These hardy plants require little care, other than dividing every three or four years,” he said. “Planting is easy as well; just cover the rhizome with an inch or less of soil with good drainage.”
Lendonwood Gardens is supported entirely by volunteer labor and donations. Memberships are available at various levels. The eight-acre botanical garden is open to the public year-round from dawn to dusk.
