While our brains continue to develop throughout our lives, the growth is never as rapid as it is between birth and age three. A baby whose brain is deprived of adequate language will never reach his or her full intellectual potential. You don’t need a master’s degree to make your child smart – you just need to talk with them. Unfortunately, children born into poverty hear in their first three years of life 30 million fewer words than those born into more affluent families. In addition, the words the poorer children did hear consisted of more prohibitions (“Don’t touch that!”), fewer affirmations (“Nice job!”) and fewer back-and-forth conversations. This word gap has been linked to vocabulary development, test scores at third grade and IQ.

Oklahoma’s state-funded Early Childhood Four-Year-Old Program continues to serve as inspiration for other states who want to increase early childhood education. We rank first in the nation every year (since 2003-2004) for serving the highest percentage of 4-year-old children. While there are no specific state funds for three-year old children, 153 Oklahoma school districts have now taken the initiative to offer classroom programs for these students.
