GRDA had $320 million in offerings, and received $1.8 billion in orders

GRDA’s efforts to strengthen the balance sheet over the past 3 years have paid off with an astounding response to their bond sale.

GRDA CEO Dan SullivanCEO Dan Sullivan, after the sale of the bonds, had this comment, “GRDA had $320 million in offerings, and received $1.8 billion in orders. It was very well subscribed, with great retail requests and we are very pleased,” said GRDA CEO Dan Sullivan. The rates received for these bonds is at 3.65%, with the taxable rate at 3.49%. “This is a great deal for us, and we are very happy with how that came together. We are appreciative of CFO Carolyn Dougherty and her staff, along with our team of financial advisors, the JP Morgan team that led negotiations and Oklahoma State Bond Advisor Jim Joseph for all the work he has done. He has been very involved in the entire process.”

GRDA CHAIRMAN Tom Kimball had the following comments:

The following story is about GRDA’s forward looking efforts to sell bonds in order to finance a new conversion of a coal fired plant to natural gas. The above story celebrates the great rates!

GRDA receives credit rating upgrades, new outlooks

Vinita – When the Grand River Dam Authority goes forward with its bond issue, totaling approximately $320 million next month, it will do so with improved credit ratings.

Last week, both Moody’s Investors Services and Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services issued upgrades and new outlooks on GRDA’s ratings. For GRDA, it is action that comes at a very important time, just before the issuance of new debt. Another rating agency, Fitch, also improved its outlook on GRDA bonds last week.

“This is great news for GRDA,” said Chief Executive Officer Dan Sullivan. “I think it reflects the hard work and important decisions on the part of our board, management and workforce but more importantly, it will benefit all our ratepayers.”

Higher credit ratings can equal lower interest rates, Sullivan added, and they will also enable GRDA to save money on natural gas hedging in the future.

“That is very important as we moved towards construction of the new GRDA Unit 3,” said Sullivan. Construction of that facility – a combined cycle natural gas generation plant – will be funded with proceeds from the October bond issue.

On Tuesday (September 16) Moody’s announced it was raising GRDA’s from A2 to A1, with a stable outlook. The agency based its findings on several key factors including GRDA’s improved financial outlook and low rates. According to Moody’s, GRDA’s electric rates consistently rank among the lowest in Oklahoma while also ranking in the lowest 20 percent nationwide.

On Wednesday (September 17), Standard & Poor’s raised its rating of GRDA to an “A+” from an “A.” In a news release issued by the agency, S&P Credit Analyst Judith Waite said the GRDA “upgrade mainly reflects our view of stronger debt service coverage due primarily to lower debt service.”

Earlier this year, S&P had revised GRDA’s outlook, based on the previous “A” rating, from stable to positive. However, this latest action is the first rating upgrade GRDA has received from the agency since it moved GRDA to the “A” in 2008. Both the S&P and Moody’s upgrades are historic and represent the highest credit ratings GRDA has ever received.

Following those upgrades, Fitch announced on Friday (September 19) that it was affirming the “A” rating it had given to GRDA in 2008. The agency is also moving GRDA’s outlook from “stable” to “positive”.

“All these agency announcements followed their very thorough reviews of GRDA operations and financial position,” said Sullivan. “We are very pleased with their assessments and look forward to the bond issue and the upcoming projects it will fund.”

While GRDA will use the majority of the proceeds from this bond issue to construct the new gas plant, other proceeds will be used to complete emissions control upgrades on Unit 2. That unit is one of two existing coal fired generators at the Grand River Energy Center (east of Chouteau).

Headquartered in Vinita, GRDA is Oklahoma’s state-owned electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. Directly or indirectly, GRDA’s low-cost, reliable electricity touches75 of 77 counties in the state. At no cost to taxpayers, GRDA also manages 70,000 surface acres of lakes in the state, including Grand Lake, Lake Hudson and the W.R. Holway Reservoir. Today, GRDA’s 500 employees continue to produce the same “power for progress” that has benefited the state for 75 years.

Jay Chicken Processing Plant to Close, Simmons takes care of its own.

It was unwelcome news that the key private employer in Jay would close it processing plant and layoff over 200 staff and employees. However, it looks as thought Simmons has structured the shut down, but taking care of their employees at Jay, America!

According to Gary Murphy, VP at Simmons, arrangements have been made for all the employees in Jay who stay in their jobs till Dec 25, to receive a $1500 severance pay, plus $100 for each year worked at the Jay facility. Many employees have worked at the Jay plant for years, and some will receive thousands of dollars in the transition.

In addition, all employees are eligible for work at Simmons Foods has operations in Jay, Southwest City, Mo.; Decatur, Ark.; Siloam Springs, Ark.; and Van Buren, Ark. Arrangements have been made to provide transportation to these remote facilities thru contracts with Pelivan.

The main reason for the Simmons plant closing in Jay, according to company insiders, is that the Jay Plant was performing a certain function in the poultry industry, killing and dressing old birds, primarily heavy hens and spent layers.

Les Newkirk, Mayor of Jay

Les Newkirk, Mayor of Jay

The plant has been successful in past years, because it handled not only Simmons birds, but also had production contracts with Tyson and others. Over the past five years, the contract demand for these poultry facilities has diminished.

In meeting in Jay to discuss this unfortunate event, sources tell the Business Journal, that General Manager of the Wal-Mart store indicated that Jay was excited about the Simmons offer for employees, and said, that for some time, Simmons has had our local staff at the jay plant on short hours, you could tell when the plant only worked 20 hours, by the paychecks cashed at our store. Although employees will now have to commute to replacement plants, the Jay economy may be better of by having all of our Jay workers receive a full weeks pay”

Officials at Simmons have also said that the Jay facility is a quality plant, and every effort will be made to find a buyer for the facility. Simmons purchased the plant years ago from Don O’Brian Poultry.

Jay Mayor Les Newkirk was asked about negative aspects to Jay’s city budget, and Newkirk indicated that it is hoped that with the reduction of needs for water and sewer, etc, the city hopefully could readjust its budget to survive the shortfall. “We will loose more than $1Million dollars in utility revenue which will have

Jay recently sold bonds for an expansion of their sewer/water plant, but sources say that jay will still be able to make the bond payments. Efforts are underway to find another manufacturer that could utilize the plant.

Soaring rates of Native American graduates rank NEO among top degree producers nationwide
Miami, Okla. – Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014 – Officials at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO) are thrilled to announce Diverse Issues in Higher Education published their annual rankings of colleges that graduate the greatest number of Native Americans nationwide and NEO’s rankings climbed in every degree program category. The American Indian Center for Excellence (AICE), implemented four years ago, continues to serve as a catalyst for that growth. NEO now ranks 2nd in conferring nursing degrees, 5th in granting psychology degrees and 6th in producing health-related degree completers. The number of Native Americans earning health related degrees increased by 25% from last year’s cohort. The college ranked higher in the social science, allied health, business and liberal arts categories, as well.

Fueling the growing number of graduates, Native Americans now comprise 23% of NEO’s total student population. Prior to AICE, enrollment figures ranged from 18-20 percent. According to president, Dr. Jeff Hale, “NEO’s vision is to be recognized as a national leader. The recent results published in Diverse Issues in Higher Education certainly indicate that the college should be viewed as a national leader in American Indian education. These results happen because of strong partnerships with our area tribes and hard work by our talented staff in the NEO American Indian Center for Excellence. We should celebrate today but tomorrow make our commitment to excellence even stronger.”
In reaction to the recently released rankings, Chief of the Peoria tribe and AICE advisory board member, John Froman, said “AICE is doing an exceptionally good job of preparing Native American students for transfer as well as grooming them for leadership positions in the Native community”.

Institutional survey data indicates that 92% of Native graduates believe NEO strongly supports American Indian students and promotes cultural awareness. One such graduate, Robynn Rulo, transferred to Oklahoma State University this year. According to Rulo, “AICE provided a nurturing and supportive environment which allowed me to practice and share my Osage culture and traditions at the college. Through AICE, I was afforded many opportunities to develop leadership skills.”
Last year, AICE:

NEO4Served as the first two year college to host the Oklahoma Native American Students in Higher Education (ONASHE) conference.
Assisted students in their participation in the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) annual convention opening ceremony.
Established a Native Day of Service to expose area middle school students to cultural practices/arts.
Partnered with the Fine Arts department and mass communications faculty to produce the world premiere of a play that explored themes of removal, loss, shared history and cultural identity.
Developed an e-course for faculty to share resources related to the Native Ways of Knowing (NWOK) culturally aligned pedagogy.
Hosted guest lecturers: Dr. Ben Madley, UCLA history professor and expert on the genocide of the Modoc tribe; Leon Hawzipta, Native storyteller; Dr. Jack Conrad, paleontologist and curator for the American Museum of Natural History; Sherman Alexie, Native author/poet/filmmaker
Director, Claudia Little Axe, presented at the World Indigenous People Conference on Education (WIPCE) in Hawaii.
Hosted executive officials from the University of Illinois.
Purchased digital space and equipment needed to archive cultural/language preservation projects and to create digital storytelling content.
Held 2nd annual graduate pinning ceremony.

“I am extremely pleased in the direct impact of our Center on Native graduation and transfer rates,” said AICE director, Claudia Little Axe. “I am a strong supporter of Native American Education; it is my passion, and I hope the job I do and true belief I have in our students will be reflected in continued positive outcomes.”

GRDA’s effort to enhance fishing is growing … literally

The Grand River Dam Authority’s efforts to enhance fishing opportunities on its lakes are getting bigger … literally.

Those familiar with GRDA’s annual “rush for brush” projects know the size and shape of the thousands of artificial fish habitats that have been built over the years by lake area volunteers. Now, GRDA is planning to enlarge that initiative by building even larger structures for placement in many of the popular public fishing locations around Grand Lake.

Go Fish GRDA

GRDA Ecosystems Management Fisheries/Tournament Coordinator Brent Davis speaks to a group of schoolchildren about the types of fish that call the Grand River system their home. Year-round, the department works to promote the fishing and fisheries in Grand and Hudson lakes through efforts like a new habitat program for public fishing areas.

Using 55-gallon PVC barrels, four inch and one inch PVC pipe, GRDA will be constructing new habitats to be placed in specific areas around the waters of Grand Lake.

“In deeper waters, we plan to stack these structures two high,” said GRDA Fisheries/Tournament Coordinator Brent Davis. “That means there will be an artificial brush pile about 15 feet in diameter and maybe 10 to 12 feet high.”

One the large-size habitats are placed, Davis said GRDA plans to mark them with buoys and signage that will designate the areas as public fishing/habitat areas. GRDA also plans to include the GPS locations for the areas on its website to make it easier for visiting anglers to find the sites.

“They should be good attractants to catch crappie in spring,” added Davis. “They will hold a lot of fish.”
Of course, he added that the brush piles will also protect a lot of fish, so both fish and fishermen will see the benefits in the future. “It’s an important part of the GRDA mission to take care of the fisheries on our waters, and this is just one more way we can do that,” said Davis.

Stay tuned for more information on this new fisheries enhancement effort.

Cox’s Corner by State Representative Doug Cox, M.D.

Health Challenge

In Oklahoma, your legislators are considered “part time legislators” due to the fact that the Legislature is in session for only four months a year. In reality, legislators are working, albeit part time, year round. Almost all of us have jobs outside of the Legislature. As an emergency room physician, I try not to mix medicine and politics. However, I get many questions about medicine and health when I am at the Capitol. One of the most common questions is, “What can we do to make Oklahomans healthier?” That is not an easy question to answer.

Doug Cox5 Certain health issues depend on genetics, i.e. inheritance.  Examples are our genetic predispositions for such things as certain types of cancer, diabetes, etc. However, it has been said that “the single greatest opportunity to improve health and reduce premature deaths lies in personal behavior. In fact, behavioral causes account for nearly 40 percent of all deaths in the United States.” Another researcher stated, “The largest potential for further improvements in population health lies in behavioral risk factors, especially smoking and obesity.”

Legislators and physicians alike wonder why people make bad decisions that affect their health adversely—to smoke, to eat too much and exercise too little, to drink alcohol to excess, to use illicit drugs and to not comply with medical treatment. Well, one reason is that bad behavior may be pleasurable in the short run, while the negative consequences of the behavior are years away. Most people have difficulty putting future goals ahead of instant gratification.

As a proud Oklahoman, I know our state can do better in our health rankings. Our neighbor to the northwest, Colorado, set an explicit goal to be ranked number one in health outcomes among all states. They may have been the first to realize that health improvement is a key to economic success of the entire state. The building of this culture of health has demonstrated positive outcomes and perceptions for Colorado. Oklahoma and Colorado had identical early death rates in 1968. Since then, Colorado’s health has improved three times more than Oklahoma. Their success was not luck. It comes from an ability to create a culture of health that has positioned the state for further economic success.

I invite you to join me in facing the task of making Oklahoma a healthier state. Let us begin by accepting the simple challenge of the Oklahoma State Health Department to “Move more, eat less, and be tobacco free.”

Instead of having a few beers and some chips and dip while watching the game on TV, let us eat some nuts, drink a glass of water and take a brisk walk. Oh wait, lets watch the game first, and then go for a walk!

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your state Representative. I can be reached at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

Good Riddance of Bad People, Gitter’ Done Station convenience

No town in Oklahoma – no matter how small or innocent – seems to be immune from the scourge of drug abuse.

Bad people Iqbal Makkar of Bentonville, Ark., and Gaurav Sehgal of Grove, Okla., operated Gitter’ Done Station convenience store on Highway 10 north of Grove from November 2011 to January 2013. They used the store to sell illegal, synthetic marijuana known as K2. We saw several young people in the emergency room at Grove, some of whom were hospitalized, from using this illegal drug.

Doug Cox Integris   We know Makkar and Sehgal sold at least 280 pounds of illegal Schedule I-controlled substances in small packets marketed under names such as Diablo, Joker, Kush and Scooby Snax , the latter of which was used to appeal to younger kids.

These drug dealers operated across state lines, laundering their profits from their illegal activities at the Gitter’ Done store through Corner Stone Bank in Southwest City, Mo. How profitable is the illegal drug market? Law enforcement seized property from them valued at more than $2.7 million, including $721,000 in cash and a Range Rover automobile. They also were ordered to pay more than $6,000 to a victim who was hospitalized as a result of smoking synthetic marijuana bought at their Gitter’ Done store.

Makkar and Sehgal were recently sentenced to 97 months and 84 months in prison, respectively. I hope they have to serve every day without an early parole. In fact, I hope neither one of them ever live to see the light of day outside of prison. Good riddance of bad people.

Thank you to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma and U.S. District Judge Claire Eagan for locking this scum up and making Grove and Northeastern Oklahoma a little better place as a result.

It is my pleasure to serve as your state representative. I can be reached atdougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

Group of 35 legislators: Potential Court ruling could overturn a decade of tax relief for Oklahomans

OKLAHOMA CITY– A group of 35 state legislators released an open letter Thursday voicing concerns about the possibility that many tax relief measures passed in Oklahoma over the past decade could be overturned, should the state Supreme Court rule that tax reductions must meet the guidelines of State Question 640.

Passed on a statewide ballot by voters in 1992 as an amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution, SQ 640 was intended to make it more difficult for the state Legislature to increase taxes. According to the provision, all proposals increasing state taxes must either be sent to a vote of the people or receive three-fourths approval in both houses of the Legislature. Such measures also cannot be approved in the final five days of the legislative session.

SENATE OKAt question is the fate of Senate Bill 1246, an income tax reduction measure passed by the Legislature during the 2014 session. The new statute’s constitutionality has been challenged in a lawsuit, filed with the state Supreme Court, on the grounds that it did not meet the standards of SQ 640. The Court heard arguments on the suit last month.

The 35 lawmakers who endorsed the letter hail from all four quadrants of the state. The two legislators who carried SB 1246 in the Senate and House of Representatives, respectively – state Sen. Kyle Loveless, R-Oklahoma City, and state Rep. Leslie Osborn, R-Mustang – endorsed the letter.

In the letter, the lawmakers make the case that it was not the aim of Oklahoma voters in 1992 to make it more difficult for the Legislature to reduce taxes. Rather, the intent was to make it harder to increase taxes.

If the Court were to rule against SB 1246 on the grounds that tax relief measures must meet the standards of SQ 640, numerous previous tax reductions could be overturned, including: income tax reductions, estate tax repeal, increases in the standard deduction, gross production tax rate reductions, manufacturing exemptions, and tax relief for retirees, military veterans and disabled veterans.

The open letter is as follows:

November 20, 2014

An Open Letter to the Citizens of the State of Oklahoma,

The Oklahoma Supreme Court recently heard oral arguments in a lawsuit brought against Senate Bill 1246, which was passed by the Oklahoma Legislature and signed into law by Governor Mary Fallin in the 2014 legislative session.

That piece of legislation, now state law, was intended to reduce Oklahoma’s personal income tax rate if certain state tax collection targets are met. The lawsuit against the new statute is being aided by vocal opponents of income tax reductions.

According to those who filed the lawsuit, the new law violates provisions of State Question 640, originally approved by a majority of Oklahoma voters in 1992 with the goal of making it more difficult for state lawmakers to increase taxes paid by Oklahomans.

In 1992, state lawmakers’ ability to increase taxes and revenue needed to be restrained. The subsequent constitutional restraint requires that bills creating or increasing taxes, or making new revenue sources for the purpose of funding government, start in the state House of Representatives. Also, such bills cannot be passed in the final five days of the legislative session. As well, they must either be submitted to a vote of the people or receive three-fourths approval by both the state Senate and House of Representatives.

The lawsuit against the new tax reduction attempts to make the case that any bill related to taxes or revenue, whether it increases or decreases taxes paid by Oklahomans, is subject to the provisions of SQ 640. This interpretation violates the plain wording of the amendment and the intent of the voters.

Taxpaying Oklahomans should be alarmed by arguments made last month before the state Supreme Court justices regarding the intent of SQ 640. It was argued before the Court that, when the citizens voted in 1992 to make it more difficult for the state Legislature to increase their taxes, it was actually the intent of voters to make it more difficult to lower their taxes. Such an interpretation would mean SQ 640 applies to any bill dealing with revenue. This is a direct violation of the plain language of the statute in question and the clear intent of the voters. If a subsequent ruling by the Court reflects such rationale, this will have grave consequences on the ability of the Legislature in the future to provide relief to taxpayers.

If the state Supreme Court rules according to the lawsuit’s interpretation, there could be serious consequences. Minor or technical amendments to revenue-related statutes, bills lowering fees, and prior personal income tax cuts, business tax cuts, estate tax cuts, credits and deductions for seniors, and retiree and veteran tax relief could all be challenged and overturned.

It is even possible that dozens, if not hundreds, of past measures enacting tax relief or the expenditure of revenue could be immediately ruled null and void.

Such a ruling sets a precedent benefiting only those who want to undo such prior tax relief as the gross production tax compromise, also passed during the 2014 legislative session.

As well, any law passed in Oklahoma since 1992 that increased or decreased the amount of funds in the state Treasury could be immediately deemed unconstitutional if it failed to meet the standards of SQ 640. This could include state budget bills, which are routinely passed in the final days of session, jeopardizing funding for schools, public safety, transportation infrastructure and safety net services.

Tax-relief measures enacted in Oklahoma since SQ 640’s passage in 1992 that could potentially be ruled unconstitutional, should SB 1246 be struck down by the Court, would include:

  • Reductions of the state’s personal income tax rate from 6.65 percent down to 5.25 percent; passed in 2005 and 2006
  • Manufacturing exemption against the state’s corporate income tax for distributors; passed in 2005
  • Prohibition of taxation on intangible personal property; sent to the voters for approval in 2012
  • Setting of the state’s gross production tax rate at 2 percent for all new oil and natural gas wells drilled in the state, for the first three years of a well’s production; passed in 2014
  • Repeal of Oklahoma’s estate tax; passed in 2005
  • Tax relief for all disabled military veterans filing personal income tax returns in Oklahoma; passed in 2005
  • Tying of the state’s standard deduction for taxpaying families to match the federal standard deduction; passed in 2006
  • Tax relief for all private-sector retirees filing personal income tax returns in Oklahoma; passed in 2006
  • Tax relief for all military veterans filing personal income tax returns in Oklahoma; passed in 2006

Clearly, this was not the intent of Oklahoma voters when they approved SQ 640 in 1992. Such actions by the state Supreme Court would inflict unnecessary hardship on Oklahoma families, retirees, veterans, entrepreneurs and job-creators.

It is our sincere hope that the Oklahoma Supreme Court will use discretion and sound judgment and not rule in such fashion as to throw out two decades-worth of tax reductions for Oklahoma taxpayers. It is truly bizarre to imagine that Oklahoma voters desired in 1992 to make it more difficult than it had previously been for state lawmakers to take less of their money.

Since 1992, Oklahomans have benefited from numerous state-level tax reductions and suffered few state-level tax increases. SQ 640 has been a good protection against rapid escalation of state-level tax rates and unnecessary growth of state government. Our state and its people have benefited as a result.

Sincerely,

America Divided? by State Representative Doug Cox, M.D.
by State Representative Doug Cox, M.D.I try to be as color blind as possible. I truly believe that all human beings are created equal. I certainly understand that black Americans, like many minorities, have had an uphill struggle over the course of history. I believe our country is making progress toward equality, but there are deep sociological issues in the black community that need to be addressed. The violent protests in Ferguson, MO., are an example.
Doug Cox2 In America, we have the right to freedom of speech and the right to gather together in peaceful protest. But there is no right to violent protesting, rioting and looting of communities when we feel we have been wronged.
If we want to narrow the equality gap we must have some faith in the American justice system. The system is not perfect – it is far from it. But when the system has been exercised under due diligence, we have to accept that the outcome is just. That means that when a grand jury has interviewed multiple witnesses, studied three autopsy reports, and came to the conclusion that there is no viable reason for criminal charges against a police officer, we have to accept the verdict and move on. All of us are free to work within the system to make it better, but trying to destroy it will not gain equality or garner respect.
We need to work hard to decrease the large number of fatherless homes in the black community. Study after study has shown that this is major contributor to social issues.
For America to be great, we must be strong, and to be strong, we must unite – regardless of race. We have to earn each other’s respect, and perhaps more importantly, we then have to behave in a manner to keep that respect.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your state representative. I can be reached at 405-557-7415 or dougcox@okhouse.gov

GRDA “We pledge to assist in area economic development …”

Adding a new layer to the commitment

“We pledge to assist in area economic development …”

Those words – appearing in the middle of the Grand River Dam Authority’s mission statement – represent an important commitment to GRDA customers, stakeholders and the state of Oklahoma. Through its generation and transmission of low-cost, reliable and abundant electricity, as well as its management of 70,000 surface acres of lake waters (at no cost to Oklahoma taxpayers) GRDA has been an important economic development engine for many decades. Now, a new economic development effort, intended for the 16 Oklahoma communities that purchase their wholesale electricity supply from GRDA, is adding a new layer to this commitment.

grda Economic Development

Grand River Dam Authority Industrial Economic Development Consultant Tom Gray speaks during a GRDA customer meeting September. A new effort by GRDA is geared towards helping its customer communities explore their economic development opportunities.

Earlier this year, GRDA contracted with Retail Attractions LLC, as well as Smith & Gray LLC (industrial development) to help these communities with economic development planning. Already, these communities have the advantage of being “public power” with utility operations that are designed to match local resources with local needs and electricity rates that are, on average, lower than investor-owned utilities. The goal of the new GRDA economic development effort is to help these communities couple their public power advantage with visioning, planning and the resources and expertise the consultants can bring.

In a typical year, GRDA’s 16 municipal customers combine to generate $150-plus million in retail electric revenues. This happens because they purchase electricity from GRDA at wholesale rates and resell to end users at retail rates. The profit from those sales then stays in the community and helps fund other city services, at no cost to tax payers. Through new economic development, not only can this public power benefit grow even larger, but so can the community’s tax revenues as more retail and industrial development moves in.

For GRDA and its customer communities, it’s all about the “power of power” in Oklahoma.

Headquartered in Vinita, GRDA is Oklahoma’s state-owned electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. GRDA’s low-cost, reliable power touches 75 of 77 counties in the state. At no cost to Oklahoma taxpayers, GRDA also manages 70,000 surface acres of lakes in the state, including Grand Lake, Lake Hudson and the W.R. Holway Reservoir. Today, GRDA’s 500 employees continue to produce the same “power for progress” that has benefited the state for 75 years.

Winterfest, Polar Bear Plunge & Christmas Light Boat Parade

The annual Christmas Light Boat Parade will be held on December 13th.

This now 25 year old tradition, started by then Cherokee Yacht Club owner, Terry Frost, is shaping up to be one of the biggest yet.  Current owners, Joe Harwood and Tom McKibben have diligently worked to build participation by not only boat owners and parade participants, but with watch parties, social media, business participation, 2 classes of boat size for competition and television coverage.

A BONFIRE on the shore at Disney State Park is being planned as a watch party area, with many private watch parties being planned.

polar-bear-plungeThere will be a competition for boats 35’ and under and boats over 35’.  Many businesses have decorated boats to get involved.  The benefit for businesses is the opportunity to join in the festivities and have their name in lights with the television coverage that will be done by Discover Oklahoma.  This will air on KTUL, Tulsa Channel 8 on December 20th at 11:30 a.m. and KSN, Joplin on December 21st at 5 p.m.   There will also be an individual film crew from Citiscape productions on hand to create DVD’s of the Cherokee Yacht Club’s 25 year old tradition.    Not only is The Boat Captain and the First Mate  invited to a Wine Dinner at Cherokee Yacht Club on Friday, December 12th; Cherokee will provide prizes to individual boat winners.

“The only known Christmas Light Boat Parade in Oklahoma will be the conclusion of a fun filled Grand Lake Christmas Celebration” states Cherokee Yacht Club co-owner, Joe Harwood.  “I am excited about this year’s event.  “Tom McKibben (co-owner) and I had a vision to bring this great tradition to a higher level this year.  It will be a grand day on Grand Lake.”

The day begins with the 15th Annual Polar Plunge at Arrowhead Yacht Club.  This event was started in 1999 by Tom McKibben.  The Polar Bear Plunge is hosted by Arrowhead Yacht Club and solely to help the less fortunate children in the South Grand Lake Area.  The party begins at 11AM with the plunge taking place at 1PM. Bring a donated toy (and yes we take money!) and join us for the “PLUNGE”!  ALL proceeds go to South Grand Lakers Helping Children.   Over the last decade the Polar Bear Club has helped over 500 families.  Along with the “sister“ event, Boats, Bikes, Bikinis and BBQ, $30,000+ is donated yearly to South Grand Lakers Helping Children.

The day’s events are scheduled as such:
Arrowhead Yacht Club 11AM:  Party Starts for Polar Bear Plunge
Arrowhead Yacht Club 1PM:  Take the Plunge!!
Cherokee Yacht Club (Approximately) 4PM:  Christmas Light Boat Parade Participants begin lining up at Cherokee Courtesy Docks.  PARASAILING SANTA AND ALL!

Christmas Light Boat Parade begins heading south into Duck Creek and then north to the Dam to meet up with the Disney Christmas Parade.
On land “Watch Parties” are asked to acknowledge the Parade with flashlights as they go by and a tentative social media set is in planning stages for watchers to communicate with the Boat Captains.

All of the day’s festivities will be covered by Discover Oklahoma.

PASSENGER RAIL TAKES OFF IN OKLAHOMA

-After long struggle, rail service now a reality-

The popular success of this effort is entirely in the hands of Oklahomans.”

OKLAHOMA CITY — “It was 2011 when I passed the Eastern Flyer legislation. I am excited to learn that recent trial efforts to put rail back on the line between Oklahoma City and Tulsa have been successful,” said state Rep. Richard Morrissette, D-OKC (District 92).

eastern-flyer-boarding

Regular service between Sapulpa and Midwest City, with connective service into Tulsa and OKC, will begin early in 2015, and, through the holidays, a specialty passenger train will run out of the newly renovated Bristow depot as the Polar Express, to provide a holiday experience for children and families. At a recent Oklahoma City Council meeting, calls from the Mayor and councilmen for regular rail service directly into the Downtown Santa Fe depot were expressed. Morrissette is hopeful now that the political will exists to address the issues previously preventing daily direct rail entry into both of our state’s major cities’ depots for arrival and departure.

Morrissette is responsible for joining with rail advocates to engage the state in the latest effort to increase passenger rail service in Oklahoma, specifically to extend the Heartland Flyer from Fort Worth to Tulsa.

route-map-2014_largeIn 2011, Morrissette passed HB1686 with the following language: “There is hereby created the Eastern Flyer Passenger Rail Development Task Force. The purpose of the task force is to study and develop a comprehensive plan for expanding conventional passenger rail service as well as high speed passenger rail service from Tulsa to Oklahoma City via public-private partnership formulas that include Department of Transportation grants and state funding allocations in conjunction with private asset contribution.”

Traveling by rail is a nostalgic experience. And, compared to air or personal vehicle, trains are classy yet practical in that riders are completely in charge of their own time during the journey, whether it’s to rest and take in the view or work on an electronic device or enjoy drinks and dining. And, rail offers travel with the least amount of damage to the environment and other transportation infrastructure.

Dedicated volunteer rail advocates in Oklahoma have pushed for this service, literally for decades. “This is an exciting time for Oklahoma. Passenger Rail Oklahoma is happy to have played a small role in helping bring passenger rail back to the rail line extending between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. This is just the beginning of our efforts to promote economic development in the city’s two largest metropolitan areas and even more so in the smaller communities bypassed in 1953 when the Turner Turnpike was completed. One need only visit Bristow this holiday season, with the Polar Express, to understand what passenger rail service can bring to small town Oklahoma. It appears new life has been breathed into this community of just under 3,000. We look forward to continuing our work in the state to further develop this economically significant transportation source,” said Evan Stair, President, Passenger Rail Oklahoma.

Regular service between Midwest City to Sapulpa, with deluxe connecting transportation into Oklahoma City and Tulsa will begin in early 2015. Iowa Pacific Holdings will operate the service. See link for details. Eastern Flyer FAQ URL: http://www.easternflyer.com/faq-2014.html .

A Shelter Dog’s Christmas Poem from Second Chance Pet Rescue

As you gather this holiday season to spend time with friends and family and your own beloved furry family members, take just a moment to think of those dogs and cats who sit alone and unwanted at the Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake. Gather up some old blankets and towels, or grab an extra bag of treats or a few toys when you are out shopping to drop them at the shelter. You can do this any time of the year, but at this special time of love and sharing, take those few extra minutes and make this holiday a little more special for a few lonely shelter animals.

Meet Lucy, a small, adorable rescue currently at Second Chance Pet Rescue but hoping to be adopted soon. When you meet her, she will steal your heart. Lucy and her four-legged friends currently residing at Second Chance Pet Rescue would like to share “A Shelter Dog’s Christmas Poem” this holiday season.

“Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town, every shelter is full–we are lost but not found. Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare; we hope every minute that someone will care. They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call, “Come here Max or Sparkie – come fetch your new ball!” But now we sit here and think of the days we were treated so fondly–we had cute, baby ways. Once we were little, then we grew and we grew. Now we are no longer young and we are no longer new.

Lucy - PupSo out the back door we were thrown like trash. They reacted so quickly–why were they so rash? We “jump on the children,” “don’t come when they call,” we “bark when they leave us,” “climb over the wall.” We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed. Now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made. If only they had trained us, if only we knew, we would have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too. We were left in the backyard, or worse. left to roam. Now we are tired and lonely and out of a home. They dropped us off here and they kissed us goodbye – ” Maybe someone else will give you a try.”

So now here we are, all confused and alone, in a shelter with others who long for a home. The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat. With so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat. They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer. We know that they wonder how long we will be here. We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds. Then we wake to see sad eyes–our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can’t adopt us and there’s no room at the Inn, could you help with the bills and fill our food bin? We count on your kindness each day of the year. Can you give more than hope to everyone here? Please make a donation to pay for the heat and help get us something special to eat. The shelter that cares for us wants us to live, and more of us will, if more people will give. (Author Unknown)

In this season of giving, will you consider helping Second Chance Pet Rescue? No donation is too small. Even $10 can provide a life saving vaccine to an animal in our care. Please send your tax-deductible donation to P.O Box 451205, Grove, OK 74345, or donate online via the website www.doitforthepets.com. Follow Second Chance Pet Rescue on Facebook to see pictures of available pets, read some heartwarming stories about adoptions and how you can help support Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake. We wish all a very Merry Christmas.
