Think Positive: by Dr. Doug Cox, State Rep District #5

In the midst of the financial crisis facing Oklahoma it is easy to become mired in negative thoughts. While we do face a major challenge in crafting a budget at the Legislature, let us take a few moments to look at some of the recent positives that have taken place during the recent years.

The number of structurally deficient bridges on our state highways has decreased from 700 to 340. We are on track to have them all repaired and/or replaced by the end of 2019.

Oklahoma has dropped from 42nd to number 33rd in the nation in regards to the number of frivolous lawsuits filed annually after passing meaningful lawsuit reform.

Doug Cox Integris  Oklahoma businesses have saved more than $300 million in workers compensation costs since reforming the system in 2012, and our workers are getting faster medical care and returning to the job sooner.

The unfunded liability of Oklahoma’s pension funds, used to pay our retired teachers and state worker, has decreased from $16 billion in 2011 to just $8.8 billion today.

We have a better educated workforce with the number of degreed or certified workers increasing by more than 2,700 annually during the last few years. The number of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) graduates has increased by 28 percent during the last five years.

Our fourth graders have shown the third most significant gains in reading ability for the whole United States.

We now have the highest level of funding for mental health services for our citizens in state history. Mental health problems and addictions are often simultaneous conditions in many patients, and we have passed historic legislation that is starting to make a difference in the number of Oklahomans abusing and dying from prescription drugs.

Last, but certainly not least, for the first time in many years we have no Oklahoma National Guard troops deployed overseas.

Oklahoma is not alone in facing severe budget issues. All states with significant dependence on energy revenue sources (such as North Dakota, Louisiana, Texas and New Mexico) are facing similar issues. With perseverance, strong leadership and tough decision making, we will survive and become stronger. Meanwhile, as the above points illustrate, all is not gloom and doom.

Thanks for allowing me to serve as your state representative. I can be reached at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

GRDA: Inspection time at Holway Reservoir

In the hills southeast of Salina, Oklahoma, on the Saline Creek arm of Lake Hudson, the Grand River Dam Authority’s W.R. Holway Reservoir has been quietly playing an important role in electricity production for 48 years.

Some may know it as “Chimney Rock Lake” or simply “Pumpback Lake” and they could also tell you about the quiet and scenic surroundings along the 21-miles of shoreline that surround just over 700 surface acres of water.  Open to the public and always a favorite of anglers, Holway is a year-round destination. Although GRDA rules prohibit the use of internal combustion engines, visitors can be found using canoes, paddles and electric trolling motors to navigate its deep and quiet waters.

Where the water flows … A shot of the canal and fore bay structure at the Grand River Dam Authority’s Salina Pumped Storage Project (SPSP) during a previous inspection. GRDA is drawing down the level of the W.R. Holway Reservoir in mid-February to allow the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to complete a required five-year inspection. In early March, the water will once again be flowing through this area.

But the reservoir plays another role for GRDA. Its waters represent potential energy, as the only pumped storage facility in the state. The six hydroelectric turbine generations inside the project’s powerhouse can also be used as pumps to move water out of Lake Hudson, up the hillside through large pipes (penstocks) and into Holway for storage. Then, when power is need, the water flows back through the pipes and generators, producing hydroelectricity.

Because of that important role, routine inspections of the facility are sometimes needed. So in mid-February, GRDA will be drawing down the level reservoir in order for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to complete one of those inspections. At the same time, GRDA will be gathering information to help guide a repair project to take place sometime next year. The inspection is expected to last through early March, with the refill and return to more normal water levels beginning as early as March 9.

By early spring, the serenity, scenery and angling opportunities of Holway Reservoir should once again be readily available, as they have been for almost half a century now.

Headquartered in Vinita, GRDA is Oklahoma’s state-owned electric utility; fully funded by revenues from electric and water sales instead of taxes. Each day, GRDA strives to be an “Oklahoma agency of excellence” by focusing on the 5 E’s: electricity, economic development, environmental stewardship, employees and efficiency.

The Bernice Bridge over Horse Creek…whats it all about, State Rep Doug Cox

I attended the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) public meeting held in Bernice last week. The purpose was to present the proposed design of the new bridge over Horse Creek on State Highway 85A in the Town of Bernice. A new bridge is needed to correct the structurally deficient bridge we presently have. ODOT wanted to obtain public input to aid them in moving forward with the completion of the environmental studies, design and subsequent construction.

ODOT BERNICE BRIDGE OPTIONS
BERNICE BRIDGEODOT was surprised to see more than 150 Grand Lake citizens at the meeting.  The standing-room only crowd made it plain to ODOT officials how valuable the Marina – and the tax dollars it generates from sales – and the crappie fishing are to our area.

We learned placing the new bridge on the north side of the existing bridge is much easier and faster than putting it on the south side due to very stringent federal regulations because the fishing pier and state park, both on the south side, were constructed with some federal money. ODOT promised to preserve the Marina, restaurant and the heated fishing dock and also to construct the bridge in a manner to disturb the fishing as little as possible.

There were a lot of excellent questions and suggestions from the citizens. Suggestions included, among others: a sidewalk on the bridge, leaving a portion of the old bridge for fishing purposes, raising the height of the bridge to allow more boats to pass during high water (some opposed this idea) and improve parking for fisherman at the bridge.

I have asked the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife and the Oklahoma Department of Fisheries to provide us more information on how they think the construction process will affect the crappie and white bass fishing in the immediate area.

The total cost of the new bridge will be approximately $7.7 million. One lane of traffic will be open during the entire construction, which will take approximately 9-10 months once it begins. Construction is scheduled to start in 2018. The bridge will have two 12-foot-wide lanes with 10-foot-wide shoulders.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meeting. The final design is still a work in progress, and I am sure many of our citizens’ ideas will be incorporated into the final plan to the extent possible while satisfying rules and regulations of the numerous state and federal agencies involved, which is yet another example of too many federal regulations and rules slowing projects and driving up costs.

Of course, not everyone in attendance will get their wish. The bridge will be too high for some and not high enough for others. Most would like to see it on the south side of the old bridge, but instead it will extend to the north. Some will say it is not worth the inconvenience while others can’t wait to see it completed.

All of this is yet another illustration of the citizen input and compromise that makes our country and democracy work. It is a slow process at times, but it is a wonderful thing.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your state representative. I can be reached at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

Safety Milestone: With over 1,200 miles of high voltage electric lines, hundreds of substations and thousands of other related components to keep the power flowing to customers, the Grand River Dam Authority’s energy delivery system is a sophisticated network. However, despite all that equipment and all the ground it covers, the system owes its reliability to the GRDA employees who design, operate and maintain it.

Celebrating safety, recognizing reliability … GRDA linemen prepare to work on a high-voltage electric transmission line in Adair County. In mid-February GRDA’s line maintenance department, along with several other departments, were recognized for achieving safety milestones.

Celebrating safety, recognizing reliability … GRDA linemen prepare to work on a high-voltage electric transmission line in Adair County. In mid-February GRDA’s line maintenance department, along with several other departments, were recognized for achieving safety milestones.

That includes a large segment of the GRDA workforce, stationed at both the Transmission Headquarters near Pryor and the Engineering and Technology Center in Tulsa. These are the employees that design and work on the lines and related equipment, inside the substations, control houses and along the rights of way. Many spend their days making sure relay equipment, meters, bucket trucks and other important power components are in working order. While their jobs are not always easy nor always performed under the best of conditions, they consistently get the job done. More importantly, they get it done safely.

In mid-February, GRDA had the opportunity to recognize their impressive safety milestone which included the GRDA Transmission Department recently achieving over 365 days without reporting any lost time injuries. Meanwhile, GRDA Metering and Engineering Departments come in at over 6,000 days each, while the GRDA Relay Department has recorded over 12,000 days.
Safety-conscious employees can enhance reliable operations, which in turn lead to the reliable delivery of electricity to thousands of Oklahomans. That has been the Authority’s business for over 75 years, and we are proud of the Team GRDA members who make it happen every day, round-the-clock.

The Oklahoma Experience: In Our Own Words book discussion at Har-Ber Village Museum
Har-Ber Village Museum will once again be the location of the free book discussion program, Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma!, made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and its funders: the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Inasmuch Foundation and the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.
For each of the five sessions this spring, participants will be provided with the book scheduled for discussion and an essay that gives insight into the overarching themes that connect the books. The theme of this series is “The Oklahoma Experience: In Our Own Words.” The Oklahoma experience is not only historical; it is also personal. This series consists of autobiographies written by “ordinary” Oklahomans about their everyday lives, families, and friends.
“We are pleased to once again offer this stimulating program,” said Har-Ber Village Museum Executive Director, Amelia Chamberlain. “We have a core group of readers that have participated each of the season we have offered this program, but we welcome new participants for this upcoming series.” To reserve your space and schedule a time to pick up the first book, call 918-786-3488 or email director@har-bervillage.com.

Many of aspects of our past have been documented in the personal memoirs of ordinary people in this series of readings. Together, they create a collective autobiography of Oklahomans from the frontier era to the recent past. These Oklahomans stress their recall of good times defined by personal growth and relationships with family, friends, and neighbors. Their memories have been softened by the passage of time and the belief that they were strengthened by their experiences. Sometimes the writers fall into nostalgia or celebrations, yet the memories they share are also more complex, reflect harder realities, and point to bigger truths.
For the most part, these books are written by and about individuals known only to their communities or families, and they share a perspective rooted in the experience of ordinary people. These writers contributed to and were shaped by families, individuals, and institutions typical of the farming communities and neighborhoods that were still characteristic of Oklahoma a generation after their demise in other parts of America. Their memories help to create an understanding of the state’s past, somewhat different from the textbook history.
In fact as well as in memory, Oklahoma did not attain the levels of economic development and urbanization characteristic of the rest of the nation until well after World War II. This meant that most Oklahomans before that time were raised in communities where farming and the corresponding patterns of life shaped their existence. Oklahomans knew they belonged to a larger world, but they perceived its influences infrequently as remote and indirect. Work was defined by task rather than by the clock, while the seasons, agricultural cycles, regular religious revivals, community celebrations, and school terms marked larger units of time. A child’s world frequently consisted of as much work as play and school.
Many families lived on the verge of economic disaster only one step away from frontier living conditions. Isolation, limited access to medical care, and similar hardships added to their struggles, while the labor required of men, women, and children frequently made them old before their time. Even those who were relatively better off lived amid circumstances largely foreign to contemporary Americans. These writers, though, saw such conditions as barriers to overcome, the measure of their opportunity. Most achieved a degree of success, but balance the celebration of their accomplishments with a sense of awe and wonder.
The authors tell their stories to share, not to gloat, in much the same manner as traditional village elders. Much of their writing has the quality of communications from grandparents to their descendants. and many consciously address the future. Ultimately, they are exploring the meaning of their lives in the hope that others might profit from their experiences. The collective autobiography they have created permit present and future generations to pursue such meanings in their own lives and communities. In doing so, readers will also find that they are probing the soul of Oklahoma, gaining a broad appreciation of the rich and complex story of our past.
Books, services and other materials for this series are provided by Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma, a project of the Oklahoma Humanities Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Funding for this series was provided by grants from the Inasmuch Foundation and Kirkpatrick Family Fund. Miami 125 Banner

(Miami, OK) – The City of Miami is gearing up for a special celebration in March and is calling on all Miamians – past and present – to join in on the fun.

Miami was officially incorporated on March 3, 1891, and to celebrate the city’s 125th anniversary organizers have four days of events and activities planned.

“This will be an excellent opportunity for us to celebrate our city’s past, present and future,” said Amanda Davis, Director of Tourism for the City of Miami. “The 125th Anniversary Committee has put together an incredible list of events and activities to help mark this milestone.”

Events begin Thursday, March 3, with Celebration Day at the Miami Civic Center from noon to 3 p.m. The celebration will feature exhibits, photo galleries and a birthday celebration complete with birthday cake. The official Anniversary Celebration Ceremony, with special guest Oklahoma Lt. Governor Todd Lamb, will begin at 2 p.m. at the Civic Center.

Activities will move downtown for a 4:30 p.m. parade.  Area businesses, organizations and residents are encouraged to take part in the parade. There is no fee to enter the parade, but registration through the Miami Area Chamber of Commerce is required. The Chamber can be reached at 918-542-4481.

Closing out Thursday’s activities is a 7:30 p.m. celebration concert at the Coleman Theatre featuring the group LEVEE Town and former Miamian Jacque Garoutte. “We are very excited about having Jacque return home to Miami with LEVEE Town for this event,” Davis said. “The band has been touring nationally for almost 15 years and has been based out of Kansas City for the last three years. This promises to be a night of great music.”

Tickets for the Levee Town concert are $10 and can be ordered online at www.colemantheatre.org or by calling 918-540-2425.

Another Miamian will be featured on Friday, March 4, as Keith Anderson takes the stage at the Showplace at Buffalo Run Casino. That concert, sponsored by Buffalo Run Casino and the Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, will kick off at 8 p.m.  Doors will open at 7 p.m.  Tickets for the Keith Anderson concert are $15 and can be purchased at the box office at the casino or online at www.buffalorun.com.

In addition to Anderson’s concert on March 4, teams of volunteers will fan out to the local schools for presentations about the history of Miami. The Miami Arts & Humanities Council will head up projects including a coloring contest for lower and upper elementary students and essay contests for Miami Junior and Senior High students.  Cash prizes will be sponsored by the Miami Arts & Humanities Council.

The Miami All-School Reunion will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, at the Miami Activity Center on the Miami High School campus. The event will include music, exhibits, memories and light snacks. There will be door prizes and special recognition for the class that has the largest amount of graduates in attendance.

On Saturday, March 5, and Sunday, March 6, organist Dennis James will present the silent film “Why Be Good” at the Coleman Theatre. James will be playing the Coleman’s famous “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ.  Show times are 7:30 p.m. on March 5 and 2:30 p.m. on March 6. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students and children. Tickets can be purchased at www.colemantheatre.org or by calling 918-540-2425.

“The anniversary celebration is packed with activities for all ages,” Davis said. “Miami graduates are encouraged to begin notifying classmates about the events, especially the all-school reunion. The 125th Anniversary Celebration will be a part of our history. We want to see everyone with a tie to Miami involved.”

The celebration will include t-shirts and a calendar highlighting special dates in the history of Miami. A limited number of calendars and t-shirts will be available for sale.  Beginning in March and lasting through the late fall, a series of banners, sponsored by community organizations and businesses, will align Main Street in downtown Miami paying tribute to milestones that reflect important dates in the history of the city.

GROVE, OK (March 1, 2016) – Members of the Women’s Auxiliary Association of Monkey Island recently presented a donation of handmade baby blankets to Logan Thronebury of the women’s health unit at INTEGRIS Grove Hospital.

WAAMI began sewing the high-quality, hand crafted blankets in October of 2014. Since that time, they have donated nearly 300 blankets to the unit. The blankets are given primarily to new parents with limited resources.

WAMI Donation to Womens Health Logan Thornsberry

Members of the Monkey Island Women’s Auxiliary delivered a box full of handmade blankets to Logan Thronebury of the INTEGRIS women’s health unit. The treasured blankets are given to newborn babies, with priority going to families with limited resources.

Logan Thronebury, B.S.N., RN, a supervisor on the unit, is very thankful for the donation. “Our parents love the blankets donated by WAAMI. It is usually the nicest and softest blanket they have. The blanket is more than just an item to our patients. The blanket holds many memories for them and becomes a cherished treasure. They are humbled and thankful to be able to wrap their bundles of joy up in one of these beautiful blankets. Most importantly they are touched that this group of generous women cares enough to share their talents and share their love during this special time in a women’s life,” said Thronebury.

WAAMI president Joyce Weber spearheads the project and said the group spends about $200 per month on the fabric. Donations to support this project are happily accepted. Please contact Weber at 918-694-4518 for more information.

INTEGRIS Health is Oklahoma’s largest health system with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, physician clinics, mental health facilities, independent living centers and home health agencies located throughout much of the state. Oh yes, back to the daylight savings time bills. I would vote against a bill to abolish daylight savings time. State Rep Doug Cox

There are two bills in the legislature dealing with daylight savings time. One of them would abolish daylight savings time, and the other one places us on daylight savings time year round. Surprisingly, I have see receive many emails from you regarding this issue. More on those later.

I find it ironic that we are dealing with bills concerning how we keep time in our state while we face a 1.3 billion dollar budget shortfall. How we deal with the budget shortfall remains to be seen. The options are basically to cut government services, find more revenue (taxes), or look for more savings with government consolidation and increased efficiencies.   I am sure the answer will be some combination of all three.  These are very tough issues and it this point it is hard to get a consensus of enough legislators to agree on any one plan. As we get closer to our mandantory adjournment at the end of May and the reality of the budget crisis fully sinks in on all members, a plan will be formulated.

Doug Cox Integris   The state capital of Oklahoma truly is the peoples building. It is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. I have had many visitors at your state capital lately. The student governing body from NEO, along with President Hale.  The kids and instructors in FFA from Concord, Afton, Wyandotte, and Jay. Grove airport manager, Lisa Jewett, visited on Aeronautics Day at the Capitol. That is just to name a few. I look forward to seeing many more of you when you visit our State Capital.

When I took office over 11 years ago I never dreamed that earthquakes would become an issue in Oklahoma.  They are now quite frequent in the eastern half of our state. We do not actually have much legislation to deal with them because most experts contribute their cause to activity related to the oil and gas industry, which is regulated by the Corporation Commission. While I have often wished that we had oil and gas production in our area, at least we do not have to deal with earthquakes!

Oh yes, back to the daylight savings time bills. I would vote against a bill to abolish daylight savings time. I would either keep it like it is or even extended it to year round. I admit, this is purely for selfish reasons. I love being able to water ski or ride wave runners on Grand Lake at 8:30 at night in the summer!

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your State Representative. I can be reached at dougcoxhouse.gov or 405 – 557 – 7415.

Wyrick calls for reduced testing for school Graduation

$

In the midst of all the budget talk, I’d like to shift gears and share some information about a bill currently in the legislature that would eliminate state mandated End of Instruction exams (EOIs).

Under current Oklahoma law, high school students must pass four out of seven EOIs to graduate from high school, regardless if they successfully earned passing grades in the required courses.  This means if a student has acceptable grades in his or her coursework, they could still not be allowed to graduate if they don’t pass a series of high-stakes, comprehensive state mandated tests before graduation.  Senate Bill 1170 would eliminate these tests, thus allowing each school district to certify mastery of curriculum requirements in graduating high school students.

wyrick600HEAD SHOTWe’ve heard the same message from parents, teachers, administrators and even students – too many required tests take away valuable learning time in the classroom and cost the state a lot of money.  Teachers don’t have time to focus on course curriculum because they spend a significant amount of time readying students for end of instruction exams.   Students lose out on instruction time because their teachers are focused on test preparation.  By eliminating the high-stakes EOI testing procedure, it allows for greater control on the local level in determining what practices are used to measure academic mastery for students.

The bill states the State Board of Education would work with Higher Ed and CareerTech to develop a list of approved assessments that would align with the Every Student Succeeds Act.  Examples of such assessments might be the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, the ACT or the SAT.  The state would cover the cost of the exam to ensure students have mastered the curriculum requirements.   This would save parents money because they’re the ones who are currently paying for the ACT or SAT tests for their child.   By using a nationally developed test, this approach would also save the state money because we won’t need to spend those dollars to develop separate tests to be used in Oklahoma schools.

SB 1170 had overwhelming bipartisan support and passed in the Senate last week unanimously with little discussion.  It seems to be the logical answer to the stifling EOI mandate that will ensure valuable classroom time is spent learning, not testing just to test.

As always, I welcome your comments and concerns about state government.  Please feel free to contact me by writing to Senator Charles Wyrick at the State Capitol, Room 523, Oklahoma City, OK, 73105, call me at (405) 521-5561 or email me at wyrick@oksenate.gov. Wyrick calls for reduced testing for school Graduation

The Whiskey Point Bootlegger’s Ball to Salute Dam Construction Workers

The South Grand Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce a partnership agreement with the Bendel Family, who have been the owners of record for the historic Whiskey Point for over four generations. Known today as Hinds Point, Ray H. Siegfried purchased the property shortly after the last gate was closed in the Pensacola Dam in 1940. Whiskey Point played a significant role in the construction of the dam.

While the accounts of the building of the dam covers a wide variety of topics, some additional old tales of days gone by have surfaced regarding the construction of the dam during the prohibition years in the great state of Oklahoma. As it turns out, distilled spirits served a significant role in keeping thousands of dam workers in the right state-of-mind and focused on the work at hand.

The living conditions, which some historians have described as being a tent city providing limited protection from the elements for workers during their off hours during the 24 hour-a-day project, were deplorable at best. Apparently distilled spirits were not available legally and some of the more creative workers, most likely future Grand Lakers, set out to solve the problem. A nearby location was chosen to establish a still operation, which reportedly was referred to as “Whiskey Point.”

Whiskey Point was but a short hike from Disney and was a densely wooded area which provided a perfect hiding place for the workers to perform their distillery operation. While the setting was apparently rough and the barkeep, perhaps a Siegfried or Bendel by name, even tougher, the first Grand Lake drinking location of record, provided a secret location for workers to unwind. It has been speculated they perhaps even engaged in an illegal gambling game or two and who knows, there could have even been ladies of the night on hand to provide companionship. The location of that pre-Grand Lake party spot is known today as Hinds Point.

Seventy-six years ago those workers were not only sipping their moonshine on Whiskey Point, they were rapidly closing in on the completion of the historic Pensacola Dam. In recognition of their contribution to the Grand Lake we enjoy today, the South Grand Lake Area Chamber is dedicating their annual season launching event as a salute to a truly remarkable feat. The Whiskey Point Bootlegger’s Ball, A Speakeasy Soirée, is set for April 2, 2016 at Cherokee Yacht Club. While the location of the salute will be complete with all the modern day yacht club amenities, the operation will be hosted in a 1930’s setting, when drinking establishments were definitely found behind closed doors and subject to police raids from time-to-time.

The Bendel Family, and the Siegrieds in years gone by, has always embraced the traditions which have made Grand Lake such a special place. Long after the construction workers had abandoned Whiskey Point, the family put on a huge fireworks show annually, which some claim was the forerunner to the big Duck Creek Show viewed by thousands annually.

Fourth generation Laker, Dave Bendel says, “We were Grand Lakers before being Grand Lakers was trendy and cool!

He added, “It’s always been in the fiber of our family events and has always been a mainstay in offering bonding opportunities which many can only dream of. To have an opportunity to be part of the salute to those who made it all possible is truly special. We can’t wait to raise our glasses in a salute those who made this all possible.”

Some will say the high point of the event evening will be a review of the shenanigans, which reportedly took place on Whiskey Point, by Dave Bendel, and the introduction of “Bendel Bender Grand Shine” to commemorate the work effort on the project.

Other activities will be a silent auction featuring Dam Site memorabilia and other items donated by the Grand Lake business community. Early plans, but more will be announced, include a live auction, a full jazz swing band, games of chance from Casino Night of Tulsa, a jail house photo booth with props, great appetizers provided by Cherokee Yacht Club and more. That is until the party gets busted by the fuzz.

The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased now at GrandLakeAreaChamber.org or call 918-782-3214 and get the password. The ball will begin at 6:30 PM at Cherokee Yacht Club, 33152 Browning Lane, Cleora, OK.

Residual Flood Damage-Cox’s Corner by State Representative Doug Cox M.D.

Several of you have inquired as to why the Spavinaw State Park is closed. The winter flooding damaged the campsites, a storage building, restrooms, the road and utilities.  The extent of repairs that need to be made exceeds the capability of the Oklahoma Department of Tourism. By state law, the repairs have to be put out to bid. There was a pre-bid meeting held last week to obtain quotes. The bids should be let in early April, with the requirement the contractor complete the work in 45 days with a penalty for delays. If all goes well, the park should be open for the Memorial Day holiday. First the tornado damage last spring, and then the winter flooding. Surely our bad luck with that park has run its course!

Doug Cox5  Legislatively, the House of Representatives have completed work on bills originating in the House. Those that passed have been sent to the Senate. Senate bills that passed have been sent to us and are making their way through the House committee process. Work on the budget is an ongoing process and continues daily.

There are many young members in the Legislature with children still at home, so last week – which was Spring Break in the school systems – was an abbreviated three-day week with no legislative session on Thursday to save the state money. Many members used this week to spend time with family.

Recent visitors from our area to the Capitol included the Mayes County Leadership Class, the Miami Chamber of Commerce and Tracy Shaw. In addition, I was recently honored to address the top Northeastern Oklahoma A&M students at their honors banquet in the student union.

It’s not all work and no play at the Capitol. Monday was the annual “Bob Wills Day,” with first the House Chamber, and later the rotunda, filled with wonderful classic country music with Oklahoma roots. Our state’s official country song is the Bob Wills tune “Faded Love.”

Thanks once again for allowing me to serve as your state representative. I can reached at dougcox@okhouse.gov or 405-557-7415.

March 10, 2016
Dear Friend of Monkey Island:
Great things are happening on Monkey Island and the Monkey Island Area Chamber is looking forward to an exciting and prosperous future for all!  Shangri-La has announced the construction of the new hotel, which is scheduled to be completed April 1, 2017.  Home sales are increasing, despite lagging oil and gas prices, and spring is in the air!
Our fledgling Chamber had a slower start than we had hoped, after the loss of our Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer-Joanie Higgins, Heather Fink and Kallie Haffner.  I will also be stepping down as President at our next membership meeting so that our younger members can step up into leadership roles.  I believe with their energy and enthusiasm the Chamber will become a dynamic force on Grand Lake.

This year it’s vital that we increase our membership and financial support so we can continue mowing and maintaining the Highway 125 roadside.  We would also like to develop a calendar of events that will increase your enjoyment at the Lake and tourism, which in turn will increase business and property values.  However, last year we only raised enough money through dues to cover our mowing expense.

Your participation is vital this year because our mowing expense will be higher due to the expansion of the pedestrian trail which requires us to mow higher up on the roadside and do more edging to keep our boulevard manicured.  We expect an increase in mowing costs from $1,250 per week to $1,950 per week.
Your prompt payment of your 2016 membership dues will enable us to carry on this important beautification project, and allow us to put our “best face forward” to home owners, customers and tourists alike.
A membership meeting will be held in early summer when more of our homeowners are in town.  In the meantime, an early spring means early mowing and it is imperative that we receive membership dues as soon as possible.
Annual Platinum Membership:           $1,000
Annual Gold Membership:                 $   500
Annual Silver Membership:                $   250
Individual/Family Memberships:        $     50
You will note that we have added an optional extra feature to our membership form this year:  you can add the name(s) and contact information of your designated emergency contacts in the event you become ill or injured while you are on the Island.  This information will be maintained in a folder at the Monkey Island Fire Department, who as first responders are often the primary contact in times of crisis.  The need for this became apparent this month when our good Island friend, Jim Dunn, became critically ill and unable to provide emergency contact information.
Please complete the attached form and return, along with your check, to MIACC, c/o Oklahoma State Bank, 26551 S HW 125, Monkey Island, OK 74331.
We’re looking forward to a safe and prosperous 2016 with our Island friends and families!!
Best regards,
