• THE OKLAHOMA EXPERIENCE: IN OUR OWN WORDS

Har-Ber Village Museum will once again be the location of the free book discussion program, Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma!,made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma Humanities Council and its funders: the National Endowment for the Humanities,the Inasmuch Foundation and the Kirkpatrick Family Fund.

For each of the five sessions this spring, participants will be provided with the book scheduled for discussion and an essay thatgives insight into the overarching themes that connect the books. The theme of this series is “The Oklahoma Experience: InOur Own Words.” The Oklahoma experience is not only historical; it is also personal. This series consists of autobiographies written by “ordinary” Oklahomans about their everyday lives, families, and friends.

• LITTLE PIONEER WORKSHOPS FOR PRESCHOOLERS AT HAR-BER VILLAGE MUSEUM

Har-Ber Village Museum is now offering workshops for the “Little Pioneer” on designated Thursday mornings from 10 to 11 am.Pre-registration is required by calling 918-786-6446 or signing up online at har-bervillage.com. The workshop fee is $5 for nonmembers; $3 for Har-Ber Village members. For nonmembers, sign up for all four sessions at once for a discounted fee of $15.

The four sessions offered for preschoolers this spring will focus on “Going Buggy” and include a theme-related story, activity, take home craft and snack.

1. The March 17 workshop is Caterpillars and Butterflies. Preschoolers will learn about the process of metamorphosis through seeing, touching and tasting.

2. On March 31, everything will be about Ants. We will decide whether “to stomp or not to stomp” on these tiny creatures. Finger puppets and singing will allow us to be up and moving just like the ant colony.

3. On April 7, the focus is on Bumble Bees. This sometimes scary bug can be fun to learn and sing about with a moving picture book.

4. Spiders will be the theme on April 21. We’ll recite the classic “Itsy Bitsy Spider” song with a twist. Preschoolers may go home saying “I Love Spiders” just like the title of the book we’ll read.

March 19, Soap Making, 9:30am-12:30pm, $20, $15

Discover how to make pure, natural soap from lard and lye, the same way the pioneers did. You will gain the knowledge and experience needed to produce your own additive-free soap at 1/3 the cost of commercial soap. Also learn how to use that soap to make laundry soap for additional savings. Workshop fee includes recipes and directions for soap, molds, hints on natural additions that will create specialty soaps for use and gift giving, and two bars of homemade soap. Class limit: 15. March 26, Pysanky: Ukrainian Egg Dyeing, 1-4:30pm, $20, $15

Just in time for Easter—learn the basics of this unique craft as you design and dye with beeswax and raw eggs! Class limit: 12. Instructor Amelia Chamberlain.

April 9, Cheese Making, 9:30am-12:30pm, $40, $35

Learn how to make several different types of soft cheese at home from easily obtainable ingredients. Our pioneer ancestors made use of the daily milk production by making butter and cheese, thereby preserving the milk for later use. Soft cheeses are easy to produce. Make fresh farmer’s cheese, ricotta cheese, and mozzarella, and taste the results. Workshop fee will include directions for several other homemade cheeses, including cream cheese, as well as ingredients that can be added to flavor cheeses. Class limit: 10. Instructor Tim Field.

April 16, Bread Making, 9:30am-12:30pm, $40, $35

Learn the basics of bread making—both yeast and quick breads. Homemade breads were a staple of our 19th Century ancestors. Breads made during this workshop will be baked in cast-iron Dutch ovens on the hearth, but all recipes can be prepared in the modern home oven as well. Homemade breads have a taste and texture unmatched by store-bought bread, and can be prepared with healthy ingredients. Breads covered in this workshop are Sally Lunn yeast bread, 30- minute-quick yeast rolls, buttermilk cornbread and mocha artisan bread. You’ll also churn butter to put to use when workshop bread results are tasted. Class limit: 10. Instructor Tim Field.

April 16 Spring Fairy Garden Workshop, 10am- noon, $35, $30

A great mother-daughter project, our spring fairy garden includes a May pole and plants. Class limit: none. Instructor Lisa Houck.

Treat your senses to the sights, sounds and smells of military and civilian life during America’s bloodiest war years, with musket and cannon fire, period music and food cooking on the hearth. Each year brings new volunteers and living history re-enactors to bring history to life.

May 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, Pioneer Sampler Days for Schools (as they are scheduled—call ahead to confirm program is held)

These educational program days have been added to Har-Ber Village’s 2016 schedule specifically for school visits. Home-schools, single classrooms, whole grade levels or entire schools will be able to experience a variety of learning stations with pioneer life themes. Reservations MUST be made at least one week in advance of program date. Call 918-786-6446 for more information.

May 21, Beginning Spinning: Wheel, Drop Spindle and Combing, 10am-4pm, $75, $65

Learn how to use a drop spindle, how to comb wool for spinning and make your own yarn on a spinning wheel. A limited number of wheels are available on a first come basis. Class limit: 5. Instructor Jeannie Wheatley.

June 6-9, Nature Camp, 9:30am-noon, $60, $50

Have you been to visit and explore Har-Ber Village’s new Natural History Activity Room? Explore the natural eco-systems that are on the museum grounds, spend time learning with the variety of hand-on displays in the Natural History Activity Room and discuss the ecology and conservation of our natural resources. Experiences will include guest speakers, plants, animals, literature and crafts as well as a daily snack. Projects created during the camp will be shared during the Ecology and Environment Day event on Saturday, June 11.

June 11, Ecology and Environment Day

In today’s throwaway society, it is important to slow down and consider the footprint we are leaving for the next generations. This special event day focuses on how our actions today impact the future. Ecology and conservation of our natural resources are the themes for the day. Several outside agencies will bring their expertise to the Village for this day of awareness. Scouts may earn a special patch by participating in this event.

June 4 & 5, Beginning Weaving, 9am-4pm, $165, $150

This two-day class is for anyone wanting to learn to weave and includes warping and threading a loom and how to read patterns. Various techniques will be taught as you weave a table runner on a four-harness loom. Yarns are provided with the class. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own loom. A limited number of looms are available on a first come basis. Class limit: 4. Instructor Jeannie Wheatley.

June 18, Herb Teas, Vinegars & Drying Herbs, 9:30am-12:30pm, $15, $10

Tour the tea and herb gardens to learn about the herbs our 19th century ancestors used for cooking and teas. Learn how to harvest, dry and prepare herbs for teas and culinary uses such as flavored vinegars, and sample several teas made with the herbs. Class limit: 15. Instructor Tim Field.

June 25, Beginning Knitting Workshop, 9:30am-12:30pm, $35, $30

Learn the basic knit stitch and technique to make this unusual decorative loopy scarf. Class limit: 5. Instructor Lisa Houck.

July 4, Independence Day Celebration

This two-hour (10am to noon) family friendly event has become a holiday tradition for the children of Grove and the Grand Lake area. Play old-fashioned lawn games, enjoy hand-cranked firecracker ice cream, decorate your bikes and wagons for the Kids’ Parade and meet a patriotic personality. Experience the old-fashioned Fourth of July fun!

July 16, Pickling, 9:30am-1:00pm, $40, $35

Pickling was a common method our ancestors used to preserve the garden’s bounty for later use. Vegetables such as cucumbers, onions, beets, and okra were pickled to provide variety on the table. Become acquainted with several simple processes used to make pickles, including refrigerator and fermented types. Class limit: 10. Instructor Tim Field.

July 23, Summer Fairy Garden Workshop, 10am-noon, $35, $30.

A great mother-daughter project, our summer garden includes a camp site and plants. Class limit: none.

July 18-21, Pioneer Camp, 9:30am-noon, $60, $50

Have you ever wondered how the Pioneers lived long ago? This camp will allow you to experience many of the daily experiences

of that time period bringing history to life. Print on a printing press, weave on a loom, learn how a blacksmith

creates metal objects, dip candles and play with old-fashioned toys. Explore the items in “Grandmother’s Trunk” and

learn how they were used, and cook on the hearth in Har-Ber Village’s Living History Cabin.

AUGUST

• UNIQUE SUMMER CAMPS JUST FOR AGES 9-13 AT HAR-BER VILLAGE MUSEUM

August 1-4, Art Camp, 9:30am-noon, $60, $50

A camp just for the budding artist—come “express yourself ” as we check out art! Experience folk crafts from days gone

by with a modern spin. Learn about the concepts of line, texture, color and design. Explore weaving, printing, sculpting

and photography. A wide variety of media including recycled objects and natural materials from the museum grounds

will be used as you build several different projects. Create edible art as part of a daily snack. Each participant will be part

of the “Art Opening” during the Art on the Lake Day event on Saturday, August 6.

Celebrate the arts! Explore a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional art through demonstrations and hands-on interactive

During the warmer months of the year, our 19th century ancestors often cooled off with a frozen treat. Learn the history and science behind hand-cranked ice creams, sherbets and ices. Prepare the mixes and hand-crank the freezers to create all three treats from period recipes, then sample the results when finished. Class limit: 15. Instructor Tim Field.

2. On September 22, will be everything Owls. The classic Pat Hutchins book “Good-Night, Owl!” will be the beginning for making a pine cone owl.

September 17, Groves Grand Talent at Har-Ber Village

The 4th annual event to find out “who’s got talent” will take place in the Event Tent at Har-Ber Village Museum. Two categories, adult and youth (ages 10-17) will be judged during a preliminary and final round. Winners will receive a first prize of $500, seond prize of $250 and third prize of $100. 1. On October 6 we will focus on Seeds. Scientific thinking is so important for preschoolers and they will be engaged in several experiences to sort, observe and even taste seeds.

2. Leaves will be the theme on October 20. Fall leaves can be a real nuisance to those having to rake, but when used to create art, they make a colorful display!

September 17, Hearth Cooking with Apples, 9:00am-1:00pm, $40, $35

Fall provided our ancestors with bountiful harvests of apples, which were incorporated into many dishes for the table.Learn to prepare a meal from 19th century recipes utilizing apples cooked in cast-iron on the hearth of Har-Ber Village’s Living History Cabin.
